But it was the legend of Djurdjevac which made me smile. Having filmed Legends of Croatia this summer with Touristar in Sibenik-Knin and Dubrovnik-Neretva Counties, I was familiar with various legends of glorious victories against the Turks, but none was as good as the legend of how Djurdjevac got its name as The Rooster Town.

Coming from Hvar, my tourism focus has always been the coast, but tourism in Varazdin is different. Not blessed with the sun, sea and beaches, Varazdin has to work harder, and its blend of historic city, ample nature, great gastronomy (of which more next time) and rich culture make it an ideal weekend destination all year round.
