A special city because of the nature that surrounds it, because of the events with which he learned to be proud and strong, and special because of its people as if they were a solid copy of sturdy Velebit and broad meadows that surround them – all of this is town of Gospić.

Although small, Gospić is town located in the heart of Lika, it is a city that is rich with legends, traditions and customs that are from generation to generation transferred to the present one. Although there are many legends that speak of the emergence of the city, the most famous is one about two princesses – Tuga and Buga, called Gospa and Jelena, who were seeking a cure for sick Gospava, arrived at the area of current Gospić. Legend tells a story that Gospava was cured with spring water and in gratitude gave an order to build a tower, while another says that the city was named after “Hospitium” inn in Kaniža founded by karlobaški kapucins back in 1721.

It is worth noting that the main symbol of Gospić is Vodarica (water woman) Marta, whose statue 150-200 years old is the work of sculptor R. F. Mihanović. Tradition says that Vodarica lived in Gospić and that at the time of plague, cholera and other diseases brought water to patients. The statue is now in front of the Cathedral NBDM.
