Baroque town-fortress from the 18th century who stood at a key strategic crossing over the river Drava and the first new city-fortress that has emerged in a strong strategic system Baroque fortified towns on the border with the Ottoman Empire is known as Osijek Fortress. The complex was built in the first half of the 18th century on the site of the medieval Osijek who from 1526 to 1687 was under Ottoman control. Situated in the ideal center of the city, from the Ottomans fortress was released on Friday, September 26th in 1687, and even today in memorial on Fridays at 11 am churches in Osijek are ringing.

This is the story about the underground world beneath the famous Osijek Fortress, about its hidden and mysterious channels. Years ago in that hidden underground world people descended and the stories about it followed in newspaper articles. The stories that were told were upgraded over the years, according to the personal perception of the narrator, which is, again, a broad spectrum, depending on what literature the one read in his youth.

One such story is that of the existence of carriages richly decorated with gold in which the Empress Maria Theresa drove, and which are, of course, hidden in tunnels. Some other stories related to the golden jars hidden deep in the catacombs, then the stories about the rooms with torture devices that witnesses saw, all to one perhaps the most promising legend – about the channel below the river Drava connecting Tvrđa and gunpowder factory in Baranja. Also, a thermographic recording’s on the opposite bank of the river Drava, which was made by one of Osijek history lovers, showed certain anomalies that could indicate the existence of channels, although more detailed research has not been conducted.
