Hum – ”capital” of the world

Anyone who lives in the city at least once thought it would be nice to live in a small town where everything can be done in fifteen minutes, where is no traffic jams and nervousness. Life in Hum, the smallest town in the world, in those moments seems like the smartest move. This small medieval town in the center of the beautiful Istria has only seventeen residents. They’re probably working only a couple of hundred meters away from their home, unfamiliar with a problem of ‘how to get somewhere on time’. It also means they can sleep longer in the morning, while a New Yorker can’t afford such luxury. Every day he commutes an average of forty minutes with underground, along with the other 4.9 million people.

People who live in a small town like Hum say that their lives are not only relaxed, but also cheaper. For the average price of an apartment in Manhattan, of probably 20 square meters, which is $ 1,49 million, in the area of Hum you can buy an entire village with six houses! Forty percent of the residents of ‘Big Apple‘ is made of immigrants, and while the average New Yorker does not know his neighbors, in Hum one knows them too well. They  grew up with them, argued, and now they exchange goods from the garden and compete on whose Biska is better.

They are very proud of it because few years ago they were called a home city of that healing brandy. Includes home made brandy ‘komovica’, white mistletoe and four species of grass, and only in Hum it is prepared according to recipe old two thousand years. Well-guarded recipe which keeps a tavern in Hum is rest of the Druid magic of ancient Celts who once lived in this area. Biska has various medicinal properties, it even regulates blood pressure so it’s not surprising that Hippocrates and Pliny wrote hymn about her. Mistletoe, holy plant of the Celtic Druids is used in magic rituals for getting drinks for strength, courage, invincibility and for the treatment of all diseases, and is an integral part of the Asterix magic potion.

In New York there are many things, but not such a mistletoe brandy or something else that is prepared according to the recipe two thousand year old, because he himself as the city does not count either four-hundredth anniversary.

Hum is special in another thing. While the “capital” of the world fosters a culture of graffiti past 40 years, in the heart of Istria, since the days of the Glagolitic script there are a ‘scribble’ on the walls. Hum as a center of Croatian medieval literacy, except for the Glagolitic Aleja (walkway) is known by forty Glagolitic graffiti discovered at the church of St. Jerome. A variety of events from the social life of the old town Hum are written with them…  Medieval Facebook! On the wall they wrote how much  Mass were held for the blacksmith Martin and similar adventures.

There is everything in the small town of Hum, and the best of it is that you only need a half hour to get to the beach in Opatija, Rabac or the other side of Umag or Porec and enjoy the beautiful Adriatic Sea.

I could persuade you to leave the big city and move to Hum or other smaller place, but everyone chooses according to their liking. Life in diversity and city bustle is not much different if you share it with people you love. In addition, we found that Hum and New York still have something in common! Both cities are located in the Guinness Book of Records! Hum, the smallest town in the world, and New York, among other things, as the city with the busiest airport.
