Dubrovnik is a coastal town in Croatia, located in the southern tip of Dalmatia, at the tip of the isthmus. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Adriatic Sea and a major sea port. For its natural and urban beauty, and for what it represents for History, Dubrovnik is known as “The Pearl of the Adriatic” or “Slavic Athens”.
Since 1979, the walled area of the urban perimeter has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The imposing and well-preserved walls, the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, the Adriatic landscape, make Dubrovnik a unique tourist destination. The old part of this city is divided in half by the Placa or Stradun – the public promenade – with cafes and restaurants, as well as several monuments and historic buildings.
At the top of Srđ hill, where you can reach by car or cable car, you will find the Croatian War of Independence Museum from where you can also enjoy a magnificent view over the city. The horrors of war are very present in this breathtaking museum, in the form of impressive stories and photographs, as well as some pieces of weaponry used during the conflict that lasted from 1991 to 1995. Although most of the city has been rebuilt, there are still areas, at the foot of the wall, where you can see empty lots and houses demolished by the attacks suffered. Even if it is just to get to know your Renaissance side, visiting Dubrovnik is quite attractive.
